South West Coast Path: From Devon Cliffs to Exmouth & Beyond

Difficulty: Easy (after steep start)

This iconic route guides walkers along the dramatic Jurassic Coast. From Devon Cliffs Holiday Park (near the South Beach Café) to Exmouth, you’ll enjoy sweeping coastal vistas, cliff-top views, and beach access when tides allow it. The route to Exmouth is mostly level after a steep start and spans around 3.7 miles (6 km), offering stunning panoramas of both cliffs and the Exe Estuary, a wildlife hotspot.

Exmouth Seafront & Promenade

Difficulty: Very Easy

For a relaxed and inclusive stroll, nothing beats Exmouth Promenade. Stretching across two miles of sandy shoreline, it’s perfect for families, dog walkers, or anyone craving fresh salty air and cheerful seafront ambiance. The promenade is accessible all year round, dog-friendly, and an excellent way to spot kitesurfers or catch a weekend musical performance.

Orcombe Point & the Geoneedle

Difficulty: Moderate

Just 3.75 miles from Exmouth Station lies Orcombe Point – the start of the Jurassic Coast and home to the striking “Geoneedle” sculpture. This moderate walk weaves through sand dunes and passes the Geoneedle’s colourful tribute to local geology before reaching sandy beaches at low tide.

Exe Estuary Trail & ‘Voices of the Exe’

Difficulty: Easy

If coastal wildlife is your thing, stroll along the tranquil Exe Estuary Trail – flat, easy-going, and ideal for birdwatchers and families alike. In winter, it becomes a prime spot to view migratory birds such as avocets and curlews. A unique addition is the ‘Voices of the Exe Trail’, a wheelchair-accessible walk featuring installations with QR codes that play audio stories from locals, sharing personal connections to the estuary.

Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton Circuit

Difficulty: Moderate

For those keen on a half-day adventure, the 6-mile circular walk from Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton delivers both coastline and countryside charm. Ascend from the beach to Orcombe Point, then follow the South West Coast Path eastward. Return via the Budleigh Salterton railway path, now a serene green trail weaving through fields and woodlands.

Ladram Bay & Sidmouth

Difficulty: Moderate-Difficult

Want to stretch your legs further? The trail east from Exmouth continues past Budleigh Salterton towards Ladram Bay (about 8½ miles) and onwards to Sidmouth (roughly 12 miles total). These more strenuous routes reward walkers with stunning rugged coastline, river crossings, and captivating seaside towns, just be sure to check tide times and transport options for the return journey.

Tips for Walkers:

  • Tide awareness is key, especially on cliff or beach segments (like Devon Cliffs or Orcombe Point, to avoid being cut off.
  • Wear suitable footwear – some paths, like the circular route, can get muddy.
  • Keep away from the edge of cliff-tops and the base of cliffs. Always check the weather forecast before you go.
  • Explore all year round – winter walks, such as the estuary trail, offer fresh, peaceful vistas and excellent wildlife watching.

Whichever path you choose, Exmouth’s coastal walks promise a blend of breathtaking nature, serene wildlife, and layers of local history.
