Orcombe Point is at the western end and start of the Jurassic Coast. The layers of mudstone and red sandstone that make up the cliffs here were laid down in a desert some 250 million years ago, at the start of a time period known as the Triassic. The rocks at Orcombe Point contain few if any fossils, echoing the desert environment of the Early Triassic Period.

The Geoneedle at Orcombe Point is an impressive landmark constructed of the various rock types found along the World Heritage coastline. It was commissioned from public artist, sculptor and designer Michael Fairfax to commemorate the opening of the World Heritage Site and was unveiled by HRH the Prince of Wales in 2002.

Stuart Line Cruises offers a Jurassic Coast Cruise which takes in the oldest (Triassic Era) section of the Coast, famous for its deep red colour. Tides permitting, the vessel will sail in close to the cliffs for a detailed view and then sail further out to offer a panoramic view. Please contact Stuart Line Cruises for more details.
