Empowering Change: Plastic Free Exmouth’s Journey Towards Sustainability

Plastic Free Exmouth is an active voluntary community group, formed in 2019, working with the local council, local businesses, schools and members of the local community to gain accreditation as a Plastic Free Community with Surfers Against Sewage. To achieve this accreditation, we had to meet certain criteria by actively encouraging local businesses, schools and members of the local community to reduce their single-use plastic consumption and adopt a more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle. We endeavour to continue these efforts to reduce the towns single-use plastic usage following the recent Plastic Free Communities certification.
Exmouth Beach

The voluntary community group is made up of a core steering group and a team of regular, selfless volunteers that dedicate their time and show passion for protecting the environment and fighting the war on single-use plastic.

The main goal is to reduce single-use plastic and prevent it from destroying our precious coastline and oceans.

We work with local community groups and businesses to help educate on the devastating effects of plastic pollution and seek ways to reduce our single-use plastic consumption.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to proactively inspire local people, schools, businesses and community groups to reduce their plastic consumption and to educate in the dangers of plastic pollution.

We aim to achieve this by:

Supporting the weekly beach clean in Exmouth
Working with local government including close links with Exmouth Town Council
The Plastic Free Festival (held in 2021, 2022 & 2023)
Regular educational events in schools, businesses and the local community
Supporting local community events including the Exmouth Festival on 21st July at Sideshore and the Organ Donor Day on 27th July in The Strand
Utilising our social media platforms to raise awareness and spread education to the wider community
Working alongside ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ to support and promote their cause
A dedicated steering group committed to making change within our local community

If you’d like to get involved then please contact us via our Facebook or Instagram page, or email plasticfreeexmouthuk@gmail.com

The weekly clean starts from both ends of the beach from 8.30am every Sunday morning-please just turn up if you’d like to join in, and look out for one of the team in our blue ‘uniform’. It really is a wonderful, positive community activity to get involved with! We enjoy a discounted hot drink at Hangtime at the end of the clean. Everyone is very warmly welcome!
